Experience for Generations
A Royal Heritage
Before comfort became an industry, it was a craft.
Before mattresses were mass-produced, they were carefully built, by hand, for rest that truly mattered.
Britain has long been a land where refinement met discipline, and where everyday objects were shaped with the same care as works of art. From architecture to textiles, craftsmanship was never an afterthought. It was a standard.
At the height of the British Empire, global trade brought the world’s finest materials to British shores. Eastern silk, Indian cashmere, and the finest wool from Yorkshire converged not to impress, but to endure. Even sleep was approached with intention, balance, and restraint.
From this environment emerged the British mattress tradition.
A philosophy built on natural materials, structural integrity, and understated elegance. Comfort designed not to be noticed at first touch, but remembered over time.
This is the heritage English Royal Mattress continues today.
Crafted Through Generations
In 1895, in the calm countryside of Yorkshire, William Richard began crafting mattresses and quilts using wool from his own sheep. What started as a practical necessity soon became a quiet expression of craftsmanship, shaped by patience, care, and respect for rest.
By his side was his wife, Elizabeth, whose role was as essential as it was understated..
With steady hands and unwavering attention, she sewed each layer by candlelight, ensuring that every piece was finished with balance and durability, not haste.
These early mattresses were never intended for mass production. They were made for family, for neighbours, and for those who valued warmth, comfort, and honest workmanship.
As demand gradually grew, William transformed part of their barn into a small workshop. Word spread, not through advertising, but through experience. People began to refer to their work simply as the Royal Mattress, recognised for its comfort, quality, and integrity.
From these foundations, a legacy took shape.
One that continues to guide English Royal Mattress today.
Evolving With Integrity
Every English Royal Mattress is built according to a standard shaped over generations.
A standard defined not by trends or market cycles, but by structure, materials, and discipline.
Natural fillings are selected for balance and breathability.
Pocket spring systems are engineered to support the body evenly, preserving alignment and reducing pressure over time. Each layer serves a purpose. Nothing is added without reason.
Mattresses are finished by hand, using techniques refined since the earliest workshop days in Yorkshire. This final stage is not cosmetic. It is essential. It ensures consistency, durability, and the unmistakable feel of a mattress built to last.
Customization is not an option. It is the expectation.
Firmness, comfort level, and composition are carefully matched to individual needs, just as they always were.
This is the English Royal Standard.
Measured. Considered. Enduring.
Handcrafted Since 1895
From the beginning, our promise has been simple:
to create the most natural, most comfortable, and most enduring bed possible.
Though generations have passed and tools have evolved, our philosophy remains unchanged. Patience over speed. Purity over excess. Pride in craft over convenience.
Every English Royal Mattress is still shaped by human hands, guided by experience, intuition, and tradition. Because we believe a bed is more than furniture. It is the foundation of well-being, and a quiet luxury that touches life every single night.
More than a century later, we continue to craft each mattress the Royal way.
Measured. Honest. Enduring.
